Ayurveda: the worlds most ancient, scientific, holistic and complete health care system.

Ayurveda means “science of life” in the Indian language and by those familiar with the practise, is commonly understood as “The science of Indian medicine”. The World Health Organisation acknowledges Ayurveda as the worlds most ancient, scientific, holistic and complete health care system.

As per Ayurveda, the individual body is composed of the five elements, namely: Ether, air, fire, water and earth. In medicine, food and the environment, these elements are represented by Rasa (taste), Guna (qualities), Virya (potency), Vipaka (post digestive taste) and Prabhava (special effects). In the body these are explained in terms of the Three Energetics of Vata, Pitta and Kapha, the Seven body tissues and the three wastes.

In Ayurveda the physiological and psychological functions of the body are known to be intricately woven, with the body having a natural tendency to maintain equilibrium for optimum health.

In this holistic sense, Ayurveda considers the following as most relevant to work out a health assessment and treatment plan:

The environment, mind-body-emotions, diet, lifestyle, family traditions, work and home conditions, emotional and physical toxins, society, age, sex, individual constitution with it’s strengths and weaknesses, quality of the mind, and acquired, environmental and karmic influences and seasonal variations.
